:inhalation or bodily application (as by massage) of fragrant essential oils (as from flowers and fruits) for therapeutic purposes

History of Essential Oils

Essential oils have been used for therapeutic purposes for nearly 6,000 years.  Each oil contains unique components, extracted from the leaves, roots, bark, seeds or blossoms of the plant.  Some are used to promote physical healing, such as reducing inflammation or treating fungal infections, while others are used for their emotional benefits to promote relaxation or focus.  Many ancient cultures used essential oils for both medicinal and spiritual purposes.  Current research suggests the scent of essential oils stimulates different parts of the brain, influencing emotional and mental well being.  Aromatherapy is now used in a wide range of settings, from hospitals to spas, to treat a variety of conditions, including nausea, pain and congestion.

Application

Essential oils can be administered in a variety of ways, the two most popular being diffusers or massage.  Diffusers disperse the oil into the air through evaporation.  Massage combines essential oils with a carrier oil, such as sweet almond oil, and is applied directly to skin.  Either method only requires a few drops of oil, as essential oils are highly concentrated products.
