The Water Witch: A Source of Inspiration
Before Sensorium Emporium existed, there was a small coffee shop in Highlands, NJ called The Water Witch Coffee Shop. Aside from selling hot drinks and pastries, it was a place of community, music, and friendship, and later became a major source of inspiration for our shop in Red Bank.
From Humble Beginnings
The Water Witch was established in 2006 as "The Water Witch Coffee and Tea Company." Started by Highlands local, Jerry Gerson, it was a place for all walks of life to commune and enjoy a limited selection of food and beverage. Later, it was bought by Valerie Browning and transformed into a local music haven. Having survived Hurricane Irene and Superstorm Sandy was a testament to its loyal customer base and popularity in Highlands.
How it Evolved
The Water Witch Coffee Shop became a mecca of culture and innovation. No, they did not reinvent the coffee bean. But they transformed the shop from a small retail space to a living atmosphere. The walls were adorned with art from local artists and almost every corner had some sort of treasured knick knack on display. Live music was a regular occurrence, with an array of official events and not so official jam sessions. The store was constantly evolving with an ever-changing list of new products, musicians and decor. Yes people came to eat and drink. But they also came to catch up with friends or to "work from home." They came for a sense of community, connection and comfort that is increasingly lacking in a digital world.
The Birth of Sensorium Emporium
When we at Mother Nature's Beauty were considering opening a brick and mortar store, we brainstormed not only what it would look like but also what we wanted to accomplish with the space. That sense of community and inclusivity so often felt at the Water Witch is what came to mind.
The building itself is a historical relic and it was important to us to restore that aspect. Youtube became our best friend as we patched and painted the original tin ceiling, pulled up the vinyl flooring and repaired the beautiful old oak underneath.
After the necessary renovations were finished, we added a tiny stage to the back of the store. Since its installation, we've had musicians of all kinds from acoustic rock to traditional Irish music. We've hosted informative classes, raucous live comedy shows and creative birthday parties. With your help, we're slowly building that sense of community and connection.
So what should we add next to our roster of events? Is there a subject you're really curious about, like making custom essential blends? Want to host a networking event for other wellness minded individuals? Maybe there's a local musician you'd love to see?

What ever happened to the Water Witch crowd? Valerie Browning started the Water Witch Foundation! Commited to growing community and fostering arts education, they host various events throughout Monmouth County.
The best news- you can still purchase Water Witch coffee, both online and at our store in Red Bank.
