Beat the Heat with these 5 Essential Oils

Everyone knows the basics of staying cool during the summer season. Stay out of the sun, stay hydrated, use a fan etc. But did you know essential oils have cooling properties as well?

Many essential oils contain natural components that activate the cold sensing nerves in your skin, tricking your brain into thinking the temperature has changed. One popular example of this is menthol, a compound found in peppermint. Let's take a look at some other options.

Spearmint

Spearmint, much like peppermint, contains a healthy dose of menthol, while being a softer alternative to its biting cousin. With a slightly sweet, energizing scent, spearmint essential oil can keep your body cool and your mind focused during summer heat waves.

Vetiver

Although commonly used in India and Africa, vetiver is still awaiting its breakthrough in the United States. It has a complex fragrance, earthy and slightly smoky with subtle hints of sweetness. Known as the tranquility oil, vetiver is a great stress reliever. Khusimol, the cooling compound in vetiver, makes it an excellent option for soothing sunburn.

Eucalyptus

With its invigorating scent, eucalyptus is most often used to help with congestion during the cold months of winter. Well now you can use eucalyptus year round! Its eucalyptol content creates a soothing sensation on the skin very similar to peppermint, perfect for use after a day at the beach.

Lavender

Lavender is by far one of the most popular essential oils. Renowned for its relaxing properties, it's also a powerful anti-inflammatory thanks to its linalool content. This cooling compound can be found in other essential oils as well, such as geranium. Use lavender essential oil to soothe heat rash and other heat related discomforts.

Sandalwood

Authentic sandalwood is a highly sought after essential oil, and for good reason. Its sweet fragrance is extensively used in the cosmetic industry, making the East Indian Sandalwood one of the most valuable trees in the world. A phenomenal stress and anxiety reliever, sandalwood's alpha-santalol compound contributes to its cooling benefits.

A Quick Refresher

All of these essential oils can be added to a diffuser or applied directly to the skin. When using topically, be sure to mix with a carrier oil, like jojoba or sweet almond, and test a small patch first. An excellent way to get heat relief on the go is to carry a face mist, like our peppermint mist, and spray it as needed. Convenient and refreshing, the 2 oz. bottle can easily be added to your beach bag (or cooler!) so you can stay cool during all your summer adventures.
