The Secret to Soft Skin: Humectants
Dry skin happens. Long, hot showers, harsh soaps, aging and sun exposure can all contribute to the problem. But there are solutions to the issue, one of them being humectants.
Humectants are an important part of achieving healthy, hydrated skin. Put simply, humectants attract water. This moisture is essential to skin health. There are both natural and synthetic types available. At Sensorium Emporium our soaps only contain natural humectants. Let's take a look at some examples below.
Glycerin
Glycerin, a natural by product of soap making, is an ingredient in almost all of our bar soaps. The fatty acids used in soap making - in our case they're vegetable based- separate when exposed to lye, creating soap and glycerin. Oftentimes, the glycerin is removed from the soap and sold as a valuable by-product for moisturizers and cosmetics. It is then replaced with cheaper, synthetic alternatives like urea or lithium chloride. These additives can be irritating to skin and not nearly as effective as the natural glycerin.
Honey
Aside from being delicious, honey has a list of surprising skin benefits.
Honey has been used in skincare as far back as the Ancient Egyptians. A known anti-microbial and exfoliator, honey is also a powerful, natural humectant. The high sugar content is what attracts moisture, making it a beneficial ingredient in skin care products. One of our most popular soaps, Honey Oatmeal Goat's Milk, harnesses this benefit to leave skin moisturized and soft.
Lactic Acid
Lactic acid is popular in skincare products for its ability to help remove dead skin cells, resulting in smoother skin. It also acts as a fabulous hydrator, making it an ideal choice for those with sensitive, dry skin.
Since goat's milk already contains natural lactic acid, we don't add any to our soaps, as too much can cause skin irritation. With over ten varieties of goat's milk base soaps at our store, there are plenty of choices for those looking to take advantage of lactic acid's benefits.
Aloe Vera
As a succulent, aloe vera plants naturally retain water. This property directly translates to its use on skin. Aloe vera gel is commonly used to soothe sunburns. Its gel is cooling and hydrating, without being greasy or heavy feeling. Many aloe products sold at pharmacies have added fragrance, dyes and fillers, taking away from its benefits. Look for a gel with five or fewer ingredients, with aloe vera juice as the main ingredient. Or better yet, grow your own aloe vera plant! As a low maintenance, easy to care for succulent, aloe vera is perfect for the beginner gardener.
In Conclusion
Humectants are a key component to maintaining moisturized, healthy skin. With a variety of natural sources available, it's an accessible solution to dry skin concerns.
