Why Shop Local?
The benefits of shopping from local stores, both in person and online
Shopping locally may seem like a conscious act of solidarity now, but there was a time when shopping locally was the only available means to buy items. Until the late 50s, almost every store was a 'mom and pop' shop, excluding some big names like Sears and Macy's. Many families only had one vehicle which also limited their shopping scope. It wasn't until the 80s that big box stores became wildly popular. Now a whopping 70% of Americans do their shopping online, with a large portion of those sales going to mega retailers like Amazon and Walmart. But those consumers are missing out on a few amazing perks.
Community Growth & Connection
One of the most obvious benefits of shopping locally is its contribution to the community. Dollars spent in the community stay in the community, meaning every purchase supports the local economy rather than a faceless conglomerate overseas. That circulating cash is then used for important regional improvements like fixing roads and building parks. Even better, thriving businesses can then give back by participating in town events, sponsoring local charities and supporting community fundraisers.
All of this leads to a stronger, more connected community. More often than not, local business owners are your neighbors trying to build on a dream. Maybe they always had a passion for baking so they opened a bakery. Or maybe, as in the case of Earth Spirit New Age Center, they've always felt a connection to the metaphysical. Founded in 1991 by a mother and son, Earth Spirit was cutting edge for the small town of Red Bank. It had an ecclectic inventory, a wealth of knowlege and... an administrative target on its back. Under an old blue law dating back to the 1920s, tarot and astrology readings were illegal, making the store an object of never ending criticism and almost running them out of business. With an outpouring of support from local customers, the business survived and the laws were repealed. In return, Earth Spirit now supports a thriving community of open minded individuals, an ever growing inventory of curiosities and a host of metaphysical events at their downtown shop at 18 Broad Street.
Niche Knowledge and Products
It's a fact of life that you can find almost anything online nowadays. But without the proper expertise, it can be hard to know where to look and what exactly you need. How many times have you wanted something simple, like an HDMI cable, only to find out that it's incompatible. Or you find out that among the myriad of product options on the shelves, that big box retailer doesn't carry that item. This is where shopping locally can be a huge advantage. Local shop owners have put a lot of time, money and hard work into building their business and in turn, have incredible and often over looked expertise. Generally, they can offer more focused customer service, personalized recommendations, and alternative options you haven't considered. And with a smaller inventory, they know exactly what they have in stock. Since having an online presence is crucial in today's world, local businesses usually have a responsive online shopping experience as well, giving you the best of both worlds.
On top of having exceptional customer service, independent businesses tend to carry more specialty items. Instead of offering a blanket selection of the most popular products, you're more likely to find unique, handmade and locally sourced options. Because they're not beholden to a corporate agenda, local shops have more indiviuality and the freedom to curate creative collections. All of this makes the shopping experience more enjoyable, which is a major plus.
Help Us Help You
With the vast expanse of the internet and the popularity of mega-retailers, it's no secret that it has become harder to keep a small business afloat. But I assure you, local businesses take great pride in their products, their communities and their loyal customers. They offer valuable knowledge and services, and are truly invested in their products. They want to give back and participate in nurturing the community, but they can't do that without your support. So take a stroll through your town. Talk to your friends and neighbors. Find a local shop and show them some love. This can be through purchasing an item, sharing a heartfelt review on social media or recommending them to your friends and family. We can build strong communities together.
