Essential Oil Spotlight: Rose

Fragrance Profile: deeply floral, sweet, fruity

Roses have existed for centuries as a token of love and romance. Their symbolism in literature is prevalent, from ancient Greek mythology to the poetry of the Middle Ages. Now it is estimated that close to 35 million roses are sold each year in the US market, making it one of the most popular flowers. Just as the flowers are a hot commodity, its characteristic scent has made rose essential oil one of the most sought after oils in the world.

Origins and Distillation Methods

Essential oils are organic plant extracts derived from the roots, stems, leaves, bark, seeds or flowers of a plant species. Their uses are many, including a natural additive to fragrances, cosmetics, soaps and cleaning products. There are over 150 species of roses but the most commonly used variety for essential oil is Rosa Damascena. Originating in Iran, this flower's biggest producers are now India, Bulgaria and Turkey.

How is rose essential oil extracted? There are varying methods but the most common is steam distillation. Rose petals are added to a large vat of water and heated, resulting in a separated vapor of steam and oil. The oil is then condensed to create the coveted product. Because of its labor intensive production process and relatively low yield, authentic rose essential oil tends to be pricey.

Tried and True Uses for Rose Essential Oil

  1. Eases Depression and Anxiety

One of the greatest benefits of rose essential oil is its mood enhancing powers. It can be used by itself or combined with other calming oils like lavender to create an uplifting, aromatic experience. Just add a few drops to a diffuser and breathe.

2. Reduces Scarring and Signs of Aging

Rose oil is a powerful anti-inflammatory. With a high concentration of antioxidants, it fights against free radicals, which can damage the skin and cause wrinkles, lines and scarring.

3. Boosts Libido

Turns out there's a reason roses are linked to romance! Rose oil's effects on reducing stress and anxiety can also increase libido by improving your mental state.

4. Pain Relief

This benefit ties back to rose's incredible anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used traditionally for various pain relief and discomforts, from headaches to period cramps.

Oil or Hydrosol- what's the difference?

While rose essential oil is highly concentrated and should be diluted with a carrier oil, rose hydrosol can be applied directly to skin. A by-product of steam distillation, hydrosol is the leftover water used when creating essential oil. It still contains a small percentage of rose oil, making it a popular, slightly cheaper option for cosmetics and skincare.

Final Thoughts

From its delightful scent to its variety of uses, rose oil has become one of the world's most popular essential oils. Rose oil can be used both topically or as aromatherapy. If applying to skin, dilute with a carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond oil. When using a diffuser, 3-4 drops of rose oil should be enough to create a spa like experience.
